In 1984, Becky Moy Behre bought an old cattle barn with 6 acres of pasture in the hills of western Howard County MD, built a house beside it & began to build Greenbridge Pottery. Aided by the skills of her biochemist husband Evan, together they developed a red stoneware clay & a unique palette of silky soft glazes born from a single base glaze Becky designed in graduate school. Greenbridge glazes now range in color & texture from glacial white to soft yellow, greens & deep brilliant blues. Over the years, the property & barn have gone through many renovations. Stone walls & walkways define spaces & lead to the barn shop & gardens, the barn’s lower level studio hums with artisan pottery production, an extension shed houses the glaze room & multiple kilns which have produced Greenbridge wares since 1985. The barn’s second floor sales gallery displays the handmade dinnerware, serving pieces & flower containers that have been made, sold & spread like seeds to every continent in the world, (including Antarctica) and a barn gallery overlooks a grassy knoll punctuated by a creative 100 foot diameter labyrinth garden which provides strollers varied interest in every season of year.
Today, Becky is supported by the invaluable varied & multiple skills of her remarkable eccentric retired scientist now musician husband Evan, son-in-law Zachary Becker (business admin & IT, clay, glaze & firing tech & sales), Michelle Schwelling (handbuilding & glazing, gallery installation), Claudia Lafuse (chief gardener, floral arranger & studio support), Nick Corso (regular visiting artisan potter of Wissahickon Pottery, Philadelphia, PA), Naomi Knoble (Zen presence & studio apprentice).
